SVA Ethics - Athetes & Coaches
This code is not intended as a moralistic prescription of desirable behaviour that would restrict the liberty of individual athletes or coaches. Instead it represents a list of positive recommendations based on a plan of conduct accepted by the athletes and coaches as a whole. It, therefore, consists of statements resembling rules of behaviour of maxims which those involved with the spirit of the game will find immediately acceptable and with which tact and compliance is expected.
Athlete and Coach (all programs)
i) that the use of alcohol amongst underage athletes or illegal substances for everyone at a SVA or VC sanctioned event or during travel to or from such an event is not acceptable.
Coach (youth programs)
These points are recommendations only, however they provide the coach with good base guidelines. Common sense should be incorporated into any rules set out by a coaching staff.
i) that a minimum of one chaperone ( of the same sex as the players) be present at sanctioned events requiring overnight stays.
ii) that curfews are set and enforced.
iii) that no alcohol be consumed while in the presence of athletes
iv) that the coaching staff is aware of where their athletes are during non competition times.
v) that vehicles carrying team members are driven by experienced, responsible individuals.
vi) that coaches refrain from intimate relationships with the athletes on their teams. While this remains a personal matter, the perceptions of other players, parents, etc. of such a relationship may have serious implications for your reputation and the credibility of your program and our sport.
While these are only recommendations, the SVA Discipline Committee may impose a penalty if conduct warrants action.
