Awards
A. Non-Competitive Awards
1. SVA Merit Award
This award is intended for individuals who have worked in a range of non-competitive capacities to further the development of volleyball for at least five years and in particular during the current year. An individual may be nominated for service within Saskatchewan or at the National or International level, though priority will be given to service to volleyball at the provincial level. Candidates will be evaluated on their commitment to volleyball and on the growth to which they have contributed within the sport.
2. SVA Service Award
This Service Award targets those individuals who have made a special contribution to the sport of volleyball in a non-competitive capacity. The criteria for the award are as follows:
a) An individual who has served on the SVA Board of Directors or as a SVA Committee member for a period of at least two years.
b) An individual who has worked on a committee that hosted an International, National, or Western Canadian.
c) An individual whom the awards committee feels has made a special contribution to the sport of volleyball in a non-competitive capacity for a period of at least two years.
Note: No paid employee of the SVA or Volleyball Canada shall be eligible for this award.
3. SVA Community Service Award
This award is intended for an individual or individuals who have donated their time and efforts to the promotion and development of volleyball within their local community. The recipient(s) of this award may or may not be actively involved with the SVA programs. The basic criteria for this award shall be the promotion of the sport within the recipient’s local community.
B. Competitive Awards
1. Male and Female Coach of the Year
a) Performance – Two Coach of the Year awards will be presented annually, one to the coach of a male team and one to the coach of a female team. The recipients of these awards will be SVA club coaches who have achieved notable success as a coach during the current year. Coaches may be nominated for achievement within the province or at the national level. Achievement as the coach of an SVA provincial or Canada Games team will not be considered.
b) Development – Two Coach of the Year awards will be presented annually to SVA club coaches, one to the coach of a male team and one to the coach of a female team. Recipients shall be coaches at any level within the province who have made a special contribution as a coach to the development of the sport of volleyball.
2. Athlete of the Year Awards
These awards shall be presented to the province’s outstanding male and female volleyball players who were impact players on their club team. The impact could be offensively, defensively or both. Please nominate one person from your club and another athlete from a different club in the province that you recognize as a dominant player in the following categories:
14 & Under Senior
15 & Under 35 & Over/45 & Over (Masters)
16 & Under Youth Beach
18 & Under Adult Beach
21 & Under
3. Laurie Ann Leier Memorial Award
The Laurie Ann Leier Award will be presented to the province’s female athlete who best exemplifies athletic and academic achievements of excellence.
4. Terry Morrow Spirit Award
The intent of this award is to honour Terry Morrow – who played for decades in adult women’s volleyball programs. Terry was the perfect teammate. She always gave her absolute best effort, was one of the best defensive players and most consistent hitters in the game. But Terry was one of those players who rarely got recognized with an MVP award or other individual recognition. Rather, she did her job quietly and effectively – for the love of the game.
Terry especially loved her experience with Masters Volleyball and not even her battle with cancer would stop her from attending the 2002 World Masters Games in Australia as manager with a team from Saskatchewan. Terry passed away in November 2003 after a two-year battle with cancer.
Criteria:
This award is a spirit of the game award, not an MVP award. It will be given to the Masters women’s player at provincials who best exemplifies teamwork, fair play, hard work, and defensive skill rather than the more obvious offensive skills for which players are often noticed.
The SVA office will accept any nominations from the membership-at-large for each of these categories at the conclusion of the club season. If you wish to nominate candidates for any of the awards listed above, please complete a copy of the nomination form (located in the forms section of this book) and submit it, along with a brief write-up describing the accomplishments of the nominee, to the SVA office. Forms will be sent to the youth and adult club contacts, or are available on the SVA website at www.saskvolleyball.ca. All nominations must be received by the deadline in order to be considered. The recipients of the awards will be honoured at the SVA’s annual Awards Banquet.
